Our Journey

Why I Write Things Down

Dear future me — and anyone else reading this…

I have a terrible memory. Neil will remind you of this — frequently, and with evidence. I can forget a conversation we had yesterday. But the things Jehovah has done for us? Those deserve better than my unreliable brain.

That’s why I started writing things down. Not because I’m a writer — I’m really not. But because some moments are too important to let the busyness of life carry them away.

The moment it clicked

It was a Tuesday. Nothing special about it — just a regular midweek meeting day. But the part on the meeting that evening was about Deuteronomy 8:2 — “Remember the whole way that Jehovah your God led you.”

I sat there and realised: I couldn’t remember most of the ways Jehovah had led us. Not because there weren’t any — but because I hadn’t written them down. They’d slipped through like sand.

That night I told Neil I wanted to start a journal. He said “like a blog?” and I said “no, like stones. Like the stones the Israelites carried out of the Jordan.” And then he went quiet for a bit, which is how I know he was actually thinking about it.

What this journal is for

It’s not a blog. It’s not advice. It’s not trying to teach you anything. It’s just us — writing down the moments where Jehovah’s hand was clear, before we forget them.

Some of those moments are big. Some are tiny. Some are just a feeling I had while standing at someone’s door on a cold morning. But they all matter. Because when someone asks “what do these stones mean?” — we want to have an answer.

So that’s why I write things down. Because my memory is terrible. And Jehovah’s kindness deserves better than being forgotten.

With love, and a terrible memory,
